Red Squirrel Masterclass

Monday 11th March - Friday 15th March 2019 - 3 Spaces Available

Monday 25th March - Friday 29th March 2019 - 3 Spaces Available

A flying squirrel image - one of the styles of images we will be trying for

This Squirrel Masterclass in the latest addition to my series of specialist masterclasses, and as with the mountain hare, white-tailed eagles, osprey and otters on Mull masterclasses the idea of these is to totally immerse yourself with a species, to really learn and get to know them. During the four days you will be in prime position to capture a diverse and stunning portfolio of red squirrel images, to be proud of.

I shall be on-hand at all times to offer help and guidance with camera settings and compositions, plus we will also be covering how to make your images look extra special with some basic post-processing using Lightroom.

Red squirrels are the darlings of the forests and woodlands, and the Highlands of Scotland has become their remaining stronghold. On this masterclass we will focus (pardon the pun) on not only the classic portrait images but habitat and action shots, maximising these elements and available light at each location. We will be visiting three different locations/sites, all carefully selected for this Red Squirrel Masterclass.

An image taken at second of two site we will be visiting

Two sessions will be at our private site near to Inverness, and it’s here where we will photograph our resident population, consisting of some individuals we have got to know very well, as they have us. Tippy and Stumpy are two of our most regular visitors plus Tippy-Two, Bandit, and Becks to name all but a few.

Last year we installed a five metre long reflection pool, in addition to a ‘leaping squirrel’ set-up, plus there will be opportunities to photograph the squirrels running towards the camera along a log, both side on and straight towards you. There will be some new posed shots on carefully selected natural-looking tree stumps and branches. Weather permitting I will also share with you the best technique for shooting the squirrels back-lit, as this is one of my own personal favourite ways to photograph them.

This masterclass is low-intensity with little walking required. The maximum distance to walk on the last day is less than a kilometre in each direction. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions relating to this.
